Art

Our three specialist art teachers benefit from the facilities of a dedicated arts block. Alongside two teaching rooms, the arts building provides the students with a dark room, a ceramics room and a laptop suite.

Key Stage 3

In Years 7 - 9 all students receive 1 lesson of art per week. During the course students will learn to use different techniques and skills to record ideas from first hand observation. They will analyse and investigate the work of artists, designers and crafts workers from a variety of cultures and learn to evaluate and question their intentions, helping them to evaluate their own work and explore new ideas.

Students are encouraged to experiment using a wide range of artistic media and techniques to develop their own interpretations and artistic style.

GCSE

In years 10-11 we offer the 2 year EdExcel GCSE art course as an option.

The assessment for GCSE consists of both coursework and examination as follows

COURSEWORK - three projects over the two years (60% of final mark)

Projects will be assessed on collecting ideas, looking at artists and explaining thoughts and opinions, developing and discussing ideas and producing a strong conclusion.

The submitted work should consist of sketch books, study sheets and a final piece which will be graded A-G and will be handed back with advice on how the mark could be improved.

EXAM - Completed over 10 hours with titles for the piece being handed out 1 month before the exam allowing time to research and develop ideas. (40% of final mark)

Extra Curricular

We run a number of clubs during lunch hours and after school including key stage 3 arts clubs, photography clubs for all ages and a series of after school clubs run by individual teachers for GCSE students to produce extra work.
