Sixth Form Dress Code 2017

The Sixth Form dress code plays an important role in contributing to the ethos both of the Sixth Form and also of the wider school. An independent and mature approach to learning is one of the key aims of the sixth form and a responsible dress code is one way of achieving this. It is only a short step to university and the world of work and a responsible dress code will prepare students for both worlds. The dress code should allow students to express themselves as individuals, but in an appropriate way. It is particularly important that the dress code complements the main school uniform policy and recognises that the school is a working environment for students from the age of 11, and further that student dress does not cause embarrassment to staff, students and other members of the school community.

Whilst students are given considerable freedom in determining how they dress to attend the Sixth Form, the following guidelines are to be adhered to:

• Shorts, skirts and dresses, if worn, should be of at least mid-thigh length.
• Leggings, if worn, must also be worn with a skirt, dress or other top, of at least mid-thigh length.

The following items are prohibited:

• Strapless, backless or string-strapped tops;
• Clothing which is revealing; for example, exposing bare midriffs;
• Caps or hats worn indoors;
• Clothing which reveals underwear;
• Flip flops or backless footwear, due to health and safety issues;
• Clothing with offensive logos;
• Ripped denim shorts or jeans.

It is recognised that this dress code will not cover all issues that may arise. Students may seek to wear, for example, items which have not been covered by the above guidelines, but which are against the tenor of the dress code. In such a case, or given any issue of dispute, the final arbiter is the Head of Sixth Form or Headteacher. The dress code will also be reviewed at least annually.

All students are expected to arrive at school wearing clothing in accordance with this dress code. Should they not do so, then they will be sent home to change by the Head or Deputy Head of Sixth Form, or Headteacher. Any student unable to go home to do this will work in isolation for the day. Repeated instances of failing to abide by the dress code will result in action under the Sixth Form disciplinary policy
